Team Johnson wins Western Region Playdown and Berth to Philadelphia

The  2012 US Curling Western Qualifier came to a thrilling conclusion on Saturday night at Seattle's  Granite Curling Club,  (www.curlingseattle.org)  with the Wes Johnson rink (Wes Johnson (Snohomish, Wash.), Brady Clark (Lynnwood, Wash.), Darren Lehto (Seattle), Steve Lundeen (Seattle) and Leon Romaniuk (Seattle)  defeating Team Beighton (Sean Beighton, Andrew Ernst, Sam Galey, MacAllan Guy (all of Seattle) 6-5 in a tiebreaker match. With the victory, Team Johnson earned an automatic bid in the 2012 Nationals, which will take place Feb. 11-18 at IceWorks Skating Complex in Aston, Pa.  As the the second place team in the Western Qualifier,  Beighton's squad gains a chance to compete in  the Men's Challenge Round Jan. 19-22 at the Eau Claire Curling Club in Eau Claire, Wis.   The 2012 US Nationals  is the first event in which teams can qualify for the 2014 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Curling. Live end-by-end scoring from the Qualifying Round can be found via the USA Curling website at www.usacurl.org/curlingrocks in the "Scoreboard" section and also at www.curlingseattle.org.
Team Johnson, With Brady Clark filling in as skip for Wes Johnson, finished the tournament with a 6-0 record.  Beighton started the round robin with three straight wins, but lost a very tight game, 7-6,  to Johnson in the final round robin game on Saturday afternoon. Because the western Qualifier has a double knockout provision, Beighton was still alive, but needed to defeat Johnson twice to win the championship. Team Johnson needed just one more win, and they got it on the last rock of the final end against Beighton on Saturday night-- a beautiful double-takeout thrown by Brady Clark to give his team 2 points for the 6-5 win.
Team Guzman ( Benj Guzman, Doug Schaak, Charles Taggart, Christopher Rimple) , Team Kauffman : (Doug Kauffman (Edmonds, Wash.), Paul Lyttle (Bothell, Wash.), John Rasmussen (Edmonds, Wash.), Liam Barksdale (Seattle) and Team Pleasants: (Chris Pleasants, Zach Radmer, Jon Chartrand, Richard Burmeister (all of Seattle) all finished the Western Qualifer with a record of 1-3.
